One of my experiences with microaggressions during my stay in Switzerland was the women stereotyping and the perception created by some of society in this country.
Occasionally, at our household when we needed some repairs or maintenence at our property, we had to call on some of the local companies for their services. What raised my eyebrows many times is theperception that the women place is at home.It was forgoone conclusion many times for the electrician and the heater maintenance to assume that I am always home and they could come in without prior notice. When confronted about the need to notify us before just showing up, they had the audicity to say: "Why we need to call since you are at home all the time". For them it is an expectation that women saty home and do not work. Their action made me feel annoyed and unhappy.
Microaggressions are based most of the times on false information, stereotyping, and generalizations. These people had good intentions and would not want to offend me.
My new awareness and understanding of microaggressios will allow to think before I talk and be careful of all my actions because I might hurt someone without even feeling it.
Bouthaina,
ReplyDeleteIn America, I think the stereotype of all women being homemakers is long gone. I guess in Switzerland this stereotype is still very much alive.
Thank you for sharing this experience with us.
